Although its name comes from French or Latin, the fun and popular Mass Lottery Keno has its origins in ancient China. Legend has it that funds raised using keno helped to build the Great Wall of China, and saved an ancient Chinese city in wartime.

Keno comes from Chinese lottery game baige piao, when Macao's Portuguese government granted license to operators.

Instead of numbers, the Chinese game used the first 80 characters from the Thousand Character Classic. Immigrants brought the game to the West when they came to work on construction of the first transcontinental railroad in the 1800s.
